Top 5 Chihuahua Training Issues (cont'd) - Chewing
Out of Control Chewing

Does it seem as if your Chihuahua is chewing a hole through your home?  Or maybe your dog has taken a liking to just the leg on that expensive couch you have?  Does your pet tear apart everything that they can get their mouth on when you're not home?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you have a Chihuahua chewing problem.

Most chewing problems stem from 1 of 4 causes:
  • Curiosity
  • Teething
  • Boredom
  • Nervousness
Chewing or gnawing on objects is one method that dogs use to explore their world.  With some many sensory receptors in their mouth, a Chihuahua can find out a lot more about an object my chewing on it as opposed to touching it with their paw.  Therefore it is instinct for a dog to bite down on something that they want to learn about.  You can cut down on the damage done to your home by removing floor-level objects and by having a huge supply of fun and interesting dog toys.  Additionally there are products, safe to dogs, that can be sprayed onto things that will keep a dog away.

Teething is 1 element that a dog has no control over.  As a loving owner, you should give your Chihuahua plenty of relief from their discomfort. Offer ice cubes to crunch on and lots of dog toys that can be put into the freezer to become nice and cold.  Toys should have soft projections that a puppy can use to sooth sore gums.

Boredom can wreak havoc!  A Chihuahua needs stimulation throughout the day.  If left alone, they will explore, and chew, on anything that they can reach.  The newest trend is dog toy dispensers, that pop out a new toy every hour or so.  Giving your dog toys designed to hold treats is also very useful.  A Chihuahua will spend hours trying to get at the yummy surprise hidden inside the dog toy.

The Chihuahua breed can also be a nervous dog.  Being so tiny most likely attributes to this.  If your dog seems to be chewing out of nervousness, take a moment to really look at the environment of your home.

Is loud music always blaring? Do people have a tendency to talk very loudly?  Are people coming and going constantly?  Do you best to provide a calming house and if you really cannot control the noise or traffic level,  offer your Chihuahua a safe haven.

An area in a quiet room with a crate or dog bed would be best.  Your dog should have a place to retreat,  to quietly play with toys when they feel overwhelmed.
