Finding a Good Breeder
There are many Chihuahua breeders in the world, and it is important to know how to spot a good one. One element of this whole issue is the words Miniature Chihuahua. There is no such breed. A Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world, there can't be a breed that is smaller. Most Chihuahuas will be 1-6 pounds when fully grown; it is unnatural to have a dog that weighs under a pound! Even though this type of breed does not exist, you can still have a good Chihuahua breeder who sells them. Why? Because the world is used to hearing this term, so Chihuahua breeders reply to that demand. They can still be a good Chihuahua breeder if they sell regular Chihuahuas but to please the public's need for tiny creatures, they call the miniature Chihuahuas.
If you find a Chihuahua breeder who sells miniature Chihuahuas or any Chihuahua that is called a smaller version of the actual breed of Chihuahua, as long as they have all of the qualities of a good Chihuahua breeder, you should feel confident. You can even bring up the subject. You can tell the breeder that you understand that there is only one breed of Chihuahua and that you want to be sure that the miniature Chihuahua you have is actually a normal, regular dog.
That being said, you must be aware of the bad Chihuahua breeders who actually go ahead and try to breed a miniature Chihuahua. These Chihuahua breeders who only care about money will do some horrible things to make their dogs small. They will force a pregnant dog to have her puppies before she is ready. They will force two runt dogs into breeding with each other, hoping that it will produce unnaturally small pups. They may also starve the mother and her pups. All of these things will, of course, make the dog sickly and even if the dog looks cute, they can have major health problems. Many dogs die in this process.
A Chihuahua breeder that breeds pups for dog stores most likely is actually the owner of a Puppy Mill. A Puppy Mill is a disgusting factory that mass manufactures dogs. The animals are piled on top of one another, rows of cages as far as one can see. Urine and feces drip down from one cage into the other below. Dog are feed trash. Dogs that are not considered "ideal" are executed. Puppies are ripped away from their mothers before they are ready. The ones that survive are cleaned up, fed well for a couple weeks to look presentable and brought to a dog store. No one realizes that the cute dog came from an evil Chihuahua breeder.
Unless you are 100% sure a puppy in a store was placed there by a dog shelter, go to a small Chihuahua to get your Chihuahua, or to a dog rescue or shelter.
The Search
You must first search for Chihuahua breeders. Make a list of those that seem appealing to you. Price is not really significant. A good Chihuahua breeder may charge more because she does not over-breed her dogs and needs to make a living. A bad Chihuahua breeder may charge more because he is a money hungry and only cares about how fat his wallet is.
After you search for Chihuahua breeders and you have a list of 8 or so, you should look over their web sites and see what they have to say. If a Chihuahua breeder claims that all of their Chihuahuas are miniature and will not grow over 1 pound as an adult, move on to the next one! A fully grown 1 pound Chihuahua is rare and a breeder who always promises this equals a dog that will have major health troubles.
After looking at what they have to show you on the Internet, it is time to listen to what they have to say. Especially if a breeder is a good distance away from your home, only keep Chihuahua breeders on your list that take the time to speak to you on the phone and answer all of your questions. Intuition will automatically cross some Chihuahua breeders off the list and this will leave you with a few, 3 or 4 that you should try to visit.
If a Chihuahua breeder is within driving distance, visit without the purpose of buying. Your visit will be to examine the property and see if it is a small, sanitary and compassionate home for dogs or if it is otherwise. Meet with the breeder and look at the dogs she has. If you see a dog that you really fall in love with, only bring him home if the Chihuahua breeder has papers to give you, medical records and a really good Chihuahua breeder will give you lots of guidance.
If the Chihuahua breeder you find is very far away, make sure that you are utterly passionately in love with a Chihuahua you see on the breeder's web site before you pay to travel long distances. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. If all goes good and the breeder has a clean, organized and honest business you may be bringing home a Chihuahua.
If the breeder does not live up to your hopes, don’t give up! No matter how badly you feel for his puppies, do not buy from an unethical breeder, you will just be giving him more wealth to keep running his business. Good Chihuahua breeder can be found.
