Long Haired Chihuahua Pictures
Two Varieties
There is only 1 Chihuahua breed; and there are 2 varieties of that breed: the short coat (also known as the smooth coat) an the long coat (also known as the long haired Chihuahua). Both of these dogs are exactly the same except for the length of the fur. To meet AKC standards, both types should have an apple domed head, although deer heads are very popular.
They have the same healthy issues, the same needs in regard to care such as feeding and, when bred properly, are the same size. The only difference will be the grooming that an owner should do when having a long haired Chihuahua.
Grooming
Not much can happen to a smooth coat, as the fur is so short it hugs the skin and there is little to brush and certainly none that can tangle. However, with a the long coat Chihuahua, the fur will be anywhere from 1 to 3 inches in length, and this means more attention to brushing and grooming.
One of the biggest elements to keep an eye on will be tangles. They are basically knots that will form in the hairs and happen naturally over time simply from natural movement. If they are not taken care of, they will grow larger and larger until there is no other choice but to snip them off. This should be avoided....and can be with proper grooming.
Brushing the coat each day should keep things under control. However, many owners do not understand the need to brush more than just the back and perhaps the legs. Tangles often occur on the belly....or the tail...even on fur between the paws. Therefore, careful brushing should be done on all parts of the Chihuahua's body.
If a tangle (also called a matt) is found, one should put conditioner on one's hands and then gently try to work out the knot. Using a comb is also another alternative; however hands often work best. Patience is needed as sometimes just a few strands can be gently pulled through...until one achieves the end goal of having the tangle completely untied.
