Question: I noticed my Chihuahua's belly by her lower nipples was a little swollen and I squeezed a little and milk came out. She just had her period and she is still a virgin. What does this mean??? Owner: Lisett, Chihuahua: ChiquiAnswer: Hi Lisett. Dogs can sometimes have a false pregnancy. What does this mean? For reasons unknown, a female dog can have an imbalance of chemicals which triggers her body into "thinking" she is pregnant with puppies.
When this happens, the belly can swell, the dog will have an increase in breast tissue and the dog may begin to produce milk.
If this has happened to your Chihuahua, in about a month or so, these physical symptoms will begin to fade and all will return to normal.
Now, we must note that you should make certain that your dog has not mated. Was there ever a time, even for a minute, that your Chihuahua was unsupervised? Either outside or inside with another dog present? It only takes one minute for a male dog to find her while she is in heat and mate her.
Therefore, if there is even a chance that this happened, it is very important to then bring your dog to the veterinarian. If she was mated by another dog, and you were not aware of it, you also would not know what breed of dog attached to her.
This makes a vet check very important, as since the Chi is the smallest dog breed in the world, if a larger breed dog mated to her...you and your vet will want to know right away.
