Chihuahua Questions & Answers

Question: My puppy has a cream coat but his skin is turning darker like black/brown.   Will is coat change? Owner:Megan

Answer: Hi Megan.  Some, not all, puppies do have a coat color change.  The skin and the coat change for different reasons.

Your Chihuahua puppy's skin is changing due to a change in pigmentation.  Being outside in the sunlight can cause the skin to change color.  It may completely change, or it may develop darker patches.

With some Chihuahuas, their tummy's will turn darker in the warm months when they are outside more...and then go back to a lighter shade in the colder months when they are indoors more often.

It is very important to check every now and then to make sure that there are no dark areas on the skin that are raised.  This may indicate a health issues.

If you notice any dark areas on the skin that are raised, this could indicate a sweat gland cyst.

If you notice lesions (sores) on the skin, this must be checked by a veterinarian right away.  It could be caused by many issues including Bowen Disease in which lesions will come and go or a bacterial infection in which there will also be a "scaling" of the skin and a thinning of the dog's coat.

A puppy may also have a change in coat color.

The change in skin color does not affect the change in coat color.  These are 2 separate issues.

It is not unusual for a puppy to be registered as one color and then as the puppy matures into an adult dog, to be a completely different color !  There is no certain way to know if a coat may change or what color the coat may change. However, the change is usually not drastic. For example a cream Chihuahua would not have a fur color change and end up as a black and white adult dog.  You may get an idea by knowing the colors of the puppy's parents and grandparents.
