Top 5 Chihuahua Training Issues (cont'd) - Obedience
Understanding the Word "No"
Just about every aspect of dog training involved the fact that the dog must understand the word "No". With the understanding of how important this word is, the dog will not be able to grasp any commands or directions from the owner. Your pet won't have a clue about how to behave.
Dogs do not naturally know to not eliminate in your living room, not to chew on your pillows, not use your hand as a teething dog toy...all of this and so much more must be learned.
How is a dog trained in obedience and commands? The basic foundation to it all is to know what "No" means. This is the single most important obedience word your dog will be trained to listen to.
Teaching the Obedience Command
How do you teach the word "No" to your dog? This most critical training command should be implemented whenever your dog is doing something that you do not want them to do. Do not say this unless you really mean it; otherwise it will lose its importance.
The word must be said with the correct tone. You must say it firmly. Do not yell and never hit your dog while saying it. Do not even "tap" your dog with a newspaper, as some old training methods used to suggest. Your goal is not to make your dog afraid of you.
When you say the word, mean it and stop your dog from continuing the behavior. For example:
If your dog is running ahead of you, say the command word "No" and pull the leash until your dog is next to you. Only after they sit and calm down should you continue walking.
If your Chihuahua bites you, train them to stop this by commanding "No" and giving your dog a chew toy.
If your dog begins to puddle inside the house, say "No" and quickly pick them up and bring them outside or to their litter box.
Use it only when needed. Repetition is the key that will teach your dog what is expected, correct behavior.
