Top 5 Chihuahua Training Issues (cont'd) - Aggression
Chihuahua Aggression
What does aggression mean? Is it just biting? When a Chihuahua shows aggression it may manifest in several ways:
Snapping - This is a warning nip without actual biting
Nipping - a moderate bite that does not break the skin
Biting - a severe form of dog aggression, not to be taken lightly
Growling - a warning that a snap, nip or bite may be coming
Barking - barking loudly with an aggressive tone
Tips to Stop Chihuahua Aggression
With Children
A Chihuahua, or any other dog breed for that matter may become irritated if small children take play time too far. Playing with your dog is one of the most enjoyed benefits. However, children should be taught to never pick up and throw the dog, push or tease. A Chihuahua may take these actions as the child pushing for dominance and the dog may push back; purely by instinct.
Strangers, Visitors and Others
When a Chihuahua shows aggression to strangers, visitors and others, this is the dog's natural built in instinct to protect those that they love: their human family.
The Chihuahua is usually a great watchdog and barking at the sound of the door bell or at people coming close to your home can be a positive element.
If your dog barks or tries to nip people that you welcome to your home, you must show your dog that the visitor is a friend. Have that person give the dog a small treat. Talk to the person in a calm tone and have them talk calmly as well. Your dog will read off of your emotions and actions. Pat your Chihuahua and tell them that "All is okay".
If your dog seems overly aggressive and the above tips do not help, your pet may need professional training. Professional dog training is highly effective in calming down even the most aggressive dogs.
