Male VS Females

Males and females are quite a bit the same in some ways, but very different in others. Typically, differences will be most apparent when either gender is not fixed (spayed or neutered)

If you are tying to decide which gender to choose or want to learn more about the male or female that you have, this is a helpful article.

Heat

If a female Chihuahua is not spayed, she will enter her first heat rather young; generally this happens sometime between 4 and 9 months old. The heat cycle happens about twice per year and can last several weeks. During this time, there is a window in which she can become pregnant if she ties with a male.

Pregnancy

Litters are relatively small for this breed, between 1 and 3 pups is considered normal. Like all other dog breeds, a Chihuahua pregnancy will last, on average, 63 days. If you suspect that your Chi is pregnant, it is important to follow care guidelines and have her examined by the vet.

Spaying & Neutering

There are both cons and pros to have your male neutered or your female spayed. However, the benefits do outweigh any negatives and most veterinarians strongly agree that having your dog fixed can extend his or her life span, and of course prevent unplanned litters.
